Hello!
My crazy work week has finally settled down a bit. We start our big incentive program at the start of the year and it’s just jammed packed with people registering and getting their initial weigh-ins and measurements (I think I’ve done at least 50 skin caliper tests in the last 2 weeks!). It’s busy, but fun. Plus it has made my work days fly by!
So what else have I been up to? Let me catch you up since Christmas…
New Years
Unfortunately Andy came down with something so we didn’t do much New Years Eve. However, I wasn’t in much of a party mood so a night in sounded good to me!
Before we got cozy at home, we celebrated by going out for some Mexican food. I enjoyed a big ol’ margarita on the rocks:
After dinner (and a nice buzz from the marg) we cuddled up on the couch and watched almost a whole season of “How I met your Mother” on DVD before we watched the ball drop.
I also quickly changed from my sweater and jeans to my usual get up of sweats and a hoodie. I’m possibly the most glamorous New Years date anyone could ask for!
It was a cozy night in with my little family!
New Years Resolution
This New Year I’ve decided to eat MORE!
I’m really disheartened by some of the blogs I go to to see that already thin and in shape girls are on these new diet plans (this also has me reevaluating reading certain blogs)
So I have no crazy diet plan to share with you. My only diet change is to add MORE to what I currently eat. I know that I am already healthy and I want to continue on that path by adding more fruits and vegetables to my diet.
My parents got Andy and I a Vitamix for Christmas and we LOVE it! It’s seriously amazing and ever since we got it we’ve been making fruit and veggie smoothies each day.
Here is one of my favorite concoctions:
- 1 orange
- 5-6 baby carrots
- Couple handfuls of baby spinach
- About a cup of broccoli
- About a 1/3 of a green pepper
- 1 scoop Amazing Grass chocolate super food
- Ice
- Water
Blend together and get a huge (and filling!) drink:
This actually made two large glasses and I drink it all. I’ve been having a smoothie every morning, then follow that up with my normal breakfast about an hour later.
Ever since I have added fruit and veggie drinks to my diet I’ve been feeling a lot more energized. I can really tell a big difference and it’s great. I do try and get at least 8 hours of sleep every night so I am sure that helps, as does exercise. But I really believe that adding more fruit and veggies has aided in my increased energy.
Before I was lucky if I got 3 different vegetables in a day. Now I get that just in the morning. The Vitamix certainly makes it easy to do that now. Thanks mom and dad!
Foot Problems
Though I’ve been feeling great energy wise, one thing that hasn’t gotten any better is my foot.
I saw a doctor here at work and had an X-ray, where nothing was found. I did get diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and saw the physical therapist who gave me some exercises to do. I’ve been doing them faithfully and actually did get some relief over Christmas break. I also have not run or done any formal cardio since November. I’ve stuck to just Hot Yoga classes and upper body strength training at home.
Unfortunately I thought I was better and taught a Turbo Kick class last week, as well as did the AMT on another day, and quickly realized that I wasn’t. My foot became painful again.
Now I’m going to cut Hot Yoga out for the next week or so (along with continuing to rest from any formal cardio) and I’m going to see if that helps. I’m also going to see the doctor again and get some more opinions. I’m not quite sure it’s just Plantar Fasciitis that I have. I think it’s a combination of things.
On top of being busy, my foot issues have also caused me to not blog as much. It’s been difficult since this blog is about fitness and I really have not been able to do much. I’m sad about it, but I’m trying my best not to dwell on it and take the right steps to get better.
I’ll keep you posted on my condition. I hope I can figure it out soon and be on my way to recovering.
Happy New Year!

Great resolution! I couldn’t agree more on some of the disheartening things I’ve seen on blogs. Makes me sad and angry too sometimes (the promotion of disordered eating to the masses). So sorry about your foot, I TOTALLY understand how you are feeling. Keep doing your stretches and I”m sure you will find relief soon! I’ll be thinking about you!
Thanks, Jamie – I know you can relate to the foot pain. I never truly appreciated how much feet do!
I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling that way! I’m tired of reading “detox” and “under 300 calories” recipes. Bring on some REAL food!
Couldn’t agree more!
I have been a little disturbed by thin, healthy women trying to loose “a few pounds” and going on new diets and eating plans. The amount of food is very low. Being in recovery from an ED, I really have to try and not read these sites anymore. I absolutely love that you are adding more fruits and veggies without taking away other foods. I love your blog and thank you for being healthy and showing true balance.
Thanks, Kellie. I definitely have to be careful what I read as well – it makes me crazy sometimes!
Hope you are feeling better soon! Just wanted to say I really enjoy your blog and I absolutely loved your New Years Eve! I think nights in like that sometimes end up being the best nights of all!
Thanks Melissa!
I’ve been cleaning out my reader and blogroll too. It’s just really sad and difficult for me to see people depriving themselves, and truth be told it makes me angry when people write ridiculously low-cal recipes but protest that *they’re* not dieting, *they* are healthy — when they look like they weigh about 75 pounds.
It seems like there are so many bloggers out there who are promoting disordered eating, whether they realise it or not. It makes me worried about all those people who are trying to recover from EDs which might be triggered by seeing already very thin women go on crazy diets.
So I’m very glad to hear that your resolution is to eat more! That’s the way it should be
I’m so sorry to hear that your foot is not any better, but hopefully when you ease up on the hot yoga it will fully recover.
I agree – there are so many fad diets going on right now….I hope people can see through it and realize what it is – a FAD. Usually that means it’s not maintainable long term.
I just wanted to hop on over here to comment and let you know that some of your readers (cough, me, cough…) like your other blog content even more than your fitness-focused content, so I hope you don’t feel like you have nothing to blog about if you’re not working out all the time! Good luck with your foot, I know it can be really frustrating when such an essential body part is injured.
Thanks Paige, that’s really nice of you to say. That gives me some motivation to blog more about non fitness stuff
I totally agree..some of these blogs are completely promoting disordered eating without even knowing it…it’s sad and I’ve also had to stop reading a few because basically it just annoys me.
Anyway, I hope your foot starts to feel better soon!
Thanks Sunny!
I could not agree MORE! There are a bunch of blogs that I no longer read..and am STILL clearing out more from my Google Reader b/c of this reason. Honestly that is why I have stopped blogging…I only did a post today for some of my readers that are also suffering from Crohn’s disease- I found out a lot of them actually like when I write about it, so I just did it for them. But I’m kind of ‘over’ the whole blogging stuff right now b/c of that reason. It encourages bad eating habits, AND I also realize that it rubs off on me..and I do the whole comparison thing. So bad. But I know I do it, so I just stop reading them. I do enjoy reading your blog because you ALWAYS keep it real
Love that about your blog! Thanks for promoting such good ideas!! Happy New Year
Hey Holly, Happy New Year!
I go through the same feelings with blogging – it’s like a roller coaster! So I understand how you feel.
I enjoy your blog and I’ve seen you grow so much over the last couple of years. I hope you continue, even if it’s not every day (which I think is too much anyway – a couple of posts per week is plenty in my opinion!).
I hope you are feeling OK as well – I know it takes so much energy to deal with Crohns and it’s a lof trial and error.
I actually stopped reading a few blogs (and quite popular ones too) because I couldn’t stand the path they were headed down. Working out multiple times a day, eating too little and getting comments of people praising them. It just made me want to scream so instead of letting it affect me I just stopped reading and moved on. I am a happier blogger and I feel better about myself for being a healthy person.
I think we’re all different when it comes to eating and exercise. Some blogs are a little to intense for me. So, I just don’t read them.
Love your New Years resolution because it’s very similar to mine!
All the best in the New Year!
